“You good for nothin’ prick!” Kurt shouted at her son when she climbed into the truck. “The fuck you doin’ runnin’ off like that? I’ve a mind to kick your ass.”

“Who were those guys?” Donnie asked, turning north onto Highway 92, and accelerating.

“Cops,” Kurt said.

“Cops on kayaks? What the fuck?”

“Keep driving,” Kurt said, taking a glass pipe from the glove box to settle her nerves. “Head to Marley and Willy’s house. We’re gonna need his help.”

Donnie glanced over at his mother. “Ma, Willy’s crazy.”

She glared back at him. “You think I don’t know that, dumbass? His kinda crazy is just what those fuckers need. Now shut up. I need to call Uncle Jubal.”

As Donnie drove, Kurt dug her phone out of the pocket of her jeans. Jubal’s personal assistant answered immediately.

“Lemme speak to Uncle Jubal,” Kurt demanded.

She’d only met Jubal’s assistant a couple of times and, though the woman was always dressed very conservatively, Kurt sensed there was something dangerous about her.

“He’s in a meeting,” the assistant replied. “Do you have something to report?”

“Oh, I don’t know,” Kurt said, trying to control her voice, “just a bunch of cops waitin’ to ambush us and then shootin’ at us. Put Jubal on, bitch.”

“Gunshots?” Chloe asked, unfussed. “Was anyone killed?”

“I think I got one of ’em. There was six against just me.”

“Never mind that,” Chloe said. “Did you speak to the developers?”

“Yeah, I spoke to ’em. They found one of C. Roy’s playthings, but I think they woulda played along if the cops hadn’t got there. Are you gonna put Uncle—”

“No,” Chloe interrupted. “As I said, he’s taking a meeting downstairs.”

“I don’t give a shit!” Kurt said. “Maybe you ain’t hearin’ too good. You need me to come down there and—”

“What?” Chloe said, cutting her off once more. “The senator is in a meeting. If you feel the need to come here to his office, Kurt, feel free.” The woman’s voice dropped low and menacing. “His meeting won’t be interrupted, and I’ll kick your ass all the way back down to the ground floor.”

Kurt was stunned. Nobody had ever talked to her that way. “Who the fuck do you think you are?”

“You have a phone in your hand,” Chloe said. “Google it. In the meantime, I’ll find out who the responding officers were and get any mention of what happened quashed.”

There was a click, and when Kurt looked at her phone’s screen, she saw that the woman had hung up on her.

“That bitch!” Kurt shouted, banging a fist on the dash.

“Who, Ma?”

“Uncle Jubal’s almighty gatekeeper. That Chloe slut.”

“She’s hot,” Donnie said, slowing as he reached the intersection at US-41.

“What’s her last name?” Kurt said, looking at her phone.

“Somethin’ like devil,” he replied. “Suits her. Man, what I could do to that ass, if I—”

“Devlin,” Kurt said, tapping the screen. “Chloe Devlin.”

She scrolled through the search results, opening one page after another. “Here she is,” Kurt finally said, turning the phone to show Donnie a picture of the woman.

Kurt scrolled down the page, slowly reading Chloe Devlin’s biography from a company she’d worked for while in college.
